What Hip Bursitis Feels Like and What Causes It
Hip bursitis symptoms are usually fairly clear, and they often help us confirm the issue during your first visit. Look for:
- Lateral (outside) hip pain, especially over the bony area called the greater trochanter
- Pain that worsens when lying on the affected side or during the night
- Discomfort when climbing stairs, standing up from a chair, or after long periods of walking
- Tenderness to touch and occasional stiffness around the outside of the hip
Common contributing factors
- Repetitive activity from running, cycling, or frequent hip movement
- A recent fall or direct impact to the hip
- Muscle imbalances, especially weak glute medius strength or reduced core control
- Leg-length differences or altered movement patterns from low-back issue
- Inflammatory conditions or a history of hip surgery
Combining Hip Bursitis Treatment with Your Doctor: When to See a PCP or Orthopedist
We handle most Hip Bursitis Therapy conservatively, but some situations call for medical collaboration. It’s always worth bringing hip pain up to your primary care doctor early on, especially if you’re experiencing:
- Persistent, severe night pain that doesn’t ease with basic care
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or systemic symptoms
- Worsening numbness, weakness, or changes in bowel or bladder function
