Degenerative Disc Disease Therapy in Houston, TX

Degenerative disc disease can feel like a slow grind. The aching builds, the stiffness lingers, and before long it’s affecting how you sleep, sit, and move through your day. At Jennifer Klein Physical Therapy in Houston Heights, we don’t hand you a standard protocol and hope for the best. We evaluate what’s actually happening in your spine, identify what’s contributing to your symptoms, and build a treatment plan around what we find.

What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?

The discs between your vertebrae act as cushions, absorbing shock and allowing movement through the spine. Over time, those discs lose hydration and height. As they thin, the surrounding joints take on more stress and nerves can become irritated. Depending on which levels are involved, you may feel pain in the low back or neck, or symptoms that radiate into the arms or legs.

“Degenerative” doesn’t mean inevitable decline. Most patients manage disc disease effectively with physical therapy, targeted exercise, and the right hands-on care. Surgery is far less common than most people expect.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

You may be dealing with DDD if you’re experiencing:

  • Persistent low back or neck pain
  • Stiffness after sitting or resting that eases with movement
  • Pain that flares with prolonged sitting, standing, or bending
  • Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into the arms or legs
  • Reduced spinal range of motion
  • Muscle weakness or fatigue in the arms or legs
  • Symptoms that vary day to day depending on activity level

Disc Disease Treatment Tailored to You

Jennifer Klein has 30+ years of clinical experience, and every treatment plan reflects that. We start with a thorough evaluation covering spinal mobility, muscle strength, posture, and the movement patterns putting stress on affected discs. Then we build from there.

Treatment at our Houston Heights clinic may include:

  • Manual therapy and joint mobilization to restore movement between spinal segments
  • Targeted strengthening for the muscles supporting the affected levels
  • Pilates-based rehabilitation for deep core stability and posture correction
  • Trigger point dry needling for muscle tension contributing to pain
  • Cupping therapy where appropriate
  • Postural retraining and activity modification guidance
  • Pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation for patients who pursue a surgical route

The goal isn’t just managing pain. It’s restoring your ability to do what you need to do without building your schedule around it.

What to Expect During Disc Disease Treatment

Your first visit is an evaluation. We assess spinal mobility, strength, posture, reflexes, and any special tests relevant to your symptoms. From that, we develop a written treatment plan with specific goals set together with you. Subsequent visits focus on hands-on treatment, progressive exercise, and refining the plan as you respond. We don’t rush through appointments, and we’ll answer your questions along the way. Most patients are scheduled two weeks at a time to minimize the scheduling back-and-forth.

In-Network Provider Status

We accept Blue Choice PPO and Blue Advantage HMO. If you have questions about your coverage before coming in, call us at (713) 203-0787. We’re happy to verify your benefits and walk you through what to expect financially before your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

For back and neck conditions, loose pants and a comfortable shirt work well. Depending on what we’re evaluating, you may be asked to put on a gown or remove your shirt. Bring sneakers or be prepared to go barefoot.

What should I bring?

Your calendar. We schedule two weeks out at a time to make things easier on everyone. Bring your physician referral if you have one, your insurance card, date of birth, email, and phone number to get the new patient process started.

Will I see the same therapist each visit?

Yes! You’ll meet with Jennifer each time you come in.
