Frozen Shoulder Therapy in Houston, TX
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is one of the more limiting conditions we see. It affects how you dress, drive, sleep, and reach for anything above shoulder height. At Jennifer Klein Physical Therapy in Houston Heights, we’ve guided patients through all three stages of frozen shoulder, and we know how to move things forward without setting recovery back.
What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is a condition where the shoulder joint capsule thickens, tightens, and fills with scar tissue, dramatically reducing range of motion and causing significant pain. It progresses through three stages: freezing (increasing pain and stiffness), frozen (less pain but severe restriction), and thawing (gradual return of motion). Left untreated, the full cycle can take two to four years. Physical therapy shortens that timeline and preserves function through each stage.
It’s more common in people between 40 and 60, in those with diabetes, and following any period of shoulder immobilization. It can also develop after a minor injury that didn’t seem significant at the time. Whatever the cause, the capsular tightening is real and progressive, and the sooner treatment begins, the more function you preserve going into the frozen stage. Waiting is not a neutral choice when it comes to adhesive capsulitis.
Signs You May Have Frozen Shoulder
Common symptoms include:
- Gradual, progressive loss of shoulder range of motion in all directions
- Deep aching at rest, worse at night
- Sharp pain with end-range movement or overpressure
- Difficulty reaching overhead, behind your back, or across your body
- Compensatory tightness in the neck and upper back
- Sleep disruption from positional discomfort
- Stiffness that’s worst first thing in the morning
Frozen Shoulder Treatment at Our Houston Clinic
Treatment is stage-dependent. What’s appropriate in the freezing stage is different from what we do in the thawing stage, and applying the wrong approach at the wrong time can extend recovery. We evaluate where you are first, then build the plan.
Treatment at Jennifer Klein Physical Therapy may include:
- Joint mobilization to restore capsular mobility and reduce restriction
- Manual therapy for surrounding muscle tension and compensatory neck and upper back patterns
- Therapeutic shoulder massage targeting the rotator cuff and periscapular musculature
- Progressive range-of-motion exercise within your current pain tolerance
- Trigger point dry needling for associated muscle tightness
- Pilates-based movement for controlled shoulder loading and scapular stability
- Patient education on pacing activity through each stage of recovery
What to Expect During Frozen Shoulder Treatment
Your first visit includes a thorough evaluation of shoulder range of motion, strength, capsular end-feel, and compensatory patterns in the neck and upper back. We identify your current stage and document the restrictions we’re working with. Treatment begins during that first visit where appropriate. We set goals together and revisit them as you progress through the stages. Frozen shoulder moves slowly, but consistent treatment keeps things moving in the right direction. We’ll track your range of motion at each visit so you can see measurable change over time.
In-Network Provider Status
We’re in-network with Blue Choice PPO and Blue Advantage HMO. Before your first visit, call (713) 203-0787 and we’ll verify your benefits and walk you through your financial responsibility upfront.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear?
It is best to come dressed in athletic clothing. We’ll need to be able to get direct access to the shoulder to assess and treat it properly.
How long does frozen shoulder treatment take?
Most patients see meaningful improvement within a few weeks of starting consistent treatment. Therapy significantly reduces the overall timeline compared to waiting it out. We’ll give you a realistic picture after your evaluation.
Will I need to do exercises at home?
Yes. Home exercise is part of the plan. We’ll teach you exactly what to do and how to do it correctly. Consistency matters more than complexity with frozen shoulder.
