Meniscus Tear Rehabilitation in Houston, TX

A meniscus tear can stop you fast. Whether it happened during a pivot on the court, a misstep on a run, or built up gradually from years of activity, the knee doesn’t let you forget it’s there. At Jennifer Klein Physical Therapy in Houston Heights, meniscus tear rehab starts with figuring out exactly what’s going on in your knee before we prescribe anything.

What Is a Meniscus Tear?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of fibrocartilage in each knee that cushions the joint, stabilizes the bones, and distributes load across the knee surface. Tears happen two ways: acute (a sudden twist, pivot, or direct contact, common in athletes) or degenerative (gradual wear over time, more common after 40). Not every tear requires surgery. For many patients, a structured physical therapy program delivers lasting results without an operating room. Research consistently supports conservative management as a first-line approach for a wide range of meniscus tears, including partial tears, degenerative tears, and many acute injuries in active adults. Even when surgery is the right call, physical therapy before and after the procedure significantly improves outcomes.

Signs You May Have a Meniscus Tear

Common symptoms include:

  • Swelling and stiffness in the knee, particularly in the first 24 to 48 hours after injury
  • Pain along the inner or outer joint line
  • A popping sensation at the time of injury
  • Difficulty fully bending or straightening the knee
  • Locking, catching, or clicking in the joint during movement
  • Instability or giving way when bearing weight
  • Pain that worsens with squatting, pivoting, or stair use

Meniscus Rehab Tailored to Your Knee

We don’t treat the MRI. We treat the knee you walked in with. Muscle weakness, movement patterns, and load distribution all influence how a meniscus heals and how the knee performs afterward. Our evaluation looks at the whole picture, including the hip and ankle, because knee mechanics rarely break down in isolation.

Meniscus tear rehabilitation at our Houston clinic may include:

  • Manual therapy to restore joint mobility and manage swelling
  • Progressive strengthening for the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip stabilizers
  • Neuromuscular retraining and balance work to restore joint control
  • Pilates-based exercise for controlled, progressive loading through the knee
  • Dry needling for surrounding muscle tension and guarding
  • Return-to-sport and return-to-activity programming
  • Post-surgical rehab following meniscectomy or meniscus repair

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first visit is a full evaluation. We test range of motion, strength in the hip and knee, joint stability, movement quality, and any special orthopedic tests relevant to your presentation. We discuss your history, what aggravates and relieves symptoms, and what your activity goals are. From there, we put a written treatment plan together with goals set by both you and the therapist. You won’t walk out with just a sheet of exercises and a follow-up date. You’ll know what we found, what we’re doing about it, and why.

In-Network Provider Status

We’re in-network with Blue Choice PPO and Blue Advantage HMO. Call us at (713) 203-0787 and we’ll verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises on cost.

What should I wear?

Shorts are ideal for knee injuries. If you don’t have them on when you arrive, bring a pair. We need to see and access the knee during evaluation and treatment.

Do I need a physician referral?

You must have a prescription from your physician. This helps us align with any goals your doctor has for your health and allows us to cover all our bases. If you don’t have a physician, consider One Medical on West 19th St (only seven blocks away!).
