Drinking plenty of water has its perks! Adequate hydration keeps our skin looking younger, enhances our flexibility, keeps our internal organs healthier, and wards off headaches and fatigue. Overall, drinking plenty of water to maintain proper hydration puts us in a better mood.
Drinking plenty of water also improves our performance. Research suggests that 2% of dehydration can hinder our performance by 10%, and when dehydration increases over 5% performance drops 30%. As you initially increase your fluid intake you will have an increase in urine output, but with time your body will adapt and you will begin to retain the fluid and use it to your body’s benefit. More fluid is needed for more strenuous workouts and hotter days. Some research promotes drinking half your body weight in ounces daily.
The majority of the population lives in a chronic state of dehydration; although less obvious with fitness enthusiasts and athletes. With an adequate increase in daily fluids, results will be immediately noticeable. You will feel more energetic, you will be able to focus better, and you will be less irritable. So grab the water bottle, not the cola, and you may just fight off the urge for that afternoon candy bar as well!
